Meet my Fiber Pets:

"Sophie"

Sophie was the beginning of my fiber farm. As far as we can tell she is a Suffolk Sheep. Shortly after moving to the Island while walking the beach I discovered Sophie on a ledge of a cliff. I was able to reach the rope she had tied around her neck and tied a longer line to it. I used this long line to coax her off the ledge and down the steep slope. When I had her at the beach she was extremely frightened and jumping around uncontrollably. I used my scarf to blindfold her.  I was able to walk her down the beach to our house. I made several phone calls to animal control, other sheep owners as well as putting up signs. I was very surprised that no one claimed her. As a spinner I was very excited to think I may be able to keep her! I have never owned a "farm" animal so my husbandry education was about to begin!

I have had Sophie for 6 years now and love her dearly!

Sophie's fiber is a soft gray with a staple length of approximately 6 inches and lots of crimp. Her fiber is wonderful either alone or blended with exotic fibers.

 "Emily"         "Maggie"

Emily and Maggie are Pygora goats. Pygora's are a cross between the Pygmy and Mohair goat. The breed was developed in Oregon in the 70's. I was looking for an unusual fiber animal to keep Sophie company. I found the Pygora to have both a wonderful personality and beautiful fiber. Emily and Maggie were raised in the house and litter box trained. When they were big enough to take care of themselves and began jumping on the dining room table they move to the barn. Sophie accepted them instantly.

Pygora are personality plus!!

Pygora fiber comes in three types depending on if it has more Mohair or Cashmere qualities to it's fiber. My girls are a blend of both. I have their fiber commercially dehaired for the finest quality fiber available. If you have never tried Pygora fiber or yarn it is a must!

              "Oscar"            "Felix"

Oscar is a Huacaya Alpaca. He has beautiful burgundy fiber.

Felix is a Suri Alpaca. He has a silky soft white fiber.

Both Oscar and Felix were rescued from a breeder going out of business.

I had never worked with Alpaca's and both the boys had never been worked with, so I knew we had our work cut out for us! After doing extensive research to find the best approach for training I found Mary McGee's TTeam Approach! What an indispensable training manual!!

"Shadow" (the baby)

Shadow is a Huacaya Alpaca. My wonderful husband bought him for my birthday! His fiber is a beautiful jet black. I named him Shadow because he follows me everywhere.

Alpaca is 7 times warmer then wool and has a wonderful soft quality much like cashmere.

"Piechu"

Piechu is an English Angora Rabbit. He has beautiful white crimpy fiber. Along with Piechu I have 3 other English Angora's; Fred who is gray, Peanut and Buddy who are brothers both cream.

Angora is 7 times warmer then wool and has a soft halo to it's yarn.
